Frequently asked questions

Common Questions About Cyber Essentials

What is Cyber Essentials?

Cyber Essentials is a UK government-backed certification showing that your organisation has five key security controls in place to guard against the most common cyber attacks.

How long does a certificate last?

Each certificate is valid for 12 months. After that you renew to keep your certification current.

How much does Cyber Essentials certification cost?

The certification fee is set on a tiered scale according to the size of your organisation, from micro businesses through to large enterprises. On top of that fixed fee, Dartford IT Support charges for managing the whole process, based on the size and complexity of your network. You get the full cost upfront before any work begins.

Can organisations outside the UK get certified?

Yes. Businesses based outside the UK can achieve Cyber Essentials too, and we support them in exactly the same way.

Do we need standard Cyber Essentials before Cyber Essentials Plus?

Yes. You must pass the standard Cyber Essentials self-assessment first, because the Plus audit tests the answers you gave. Once you hold the standard certificate, you have three months to complete Cyber Essentials Plus.

What is the difference between Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus?

Standard Cyber Essentials is an independently verified self-assessment confirming your security matches the scheme's requirements. Cyber Essentials Plus goes further, with a technical audit using vulnerability testing tools to prove those controls hold up in real-world conditions.

How does Cyber Essentials compare with ISO 27001?

Cyber Essentials sets a strong security baseline but is far less extensive than ISO 27001. It is an excellent starting point for businesses without any certification, turning good practice into a recognised standard. Many organisations achieve Cyber Essentials and Plus first, then progress to ISO 27001, which requires a much wider set of policies, procedures and technical controls.

How long does certification take?

Most businesses achieve certification within 7 to 10 working days.

Is Cyber Essentials required to win contracts?

Frequently, yes. Many government departments and larger organisations will only work with suppliers who hold it.

What if our systems are not ready yet?

Our cyber security team works with you to fix any gaps before your submission, so you go in confident of passing.

Who issues the certificate?

Certificates are awarded by an independent, accredited Cyber Essentials certification body. Dartford IT Support handles your preparation, guidance and project management.
